Filled with (feeling) / with all one's heart

〜をこめて means that you put a feeling or a wish into something you make or do: cooking with love, writing a letter full of thanks, singing with a wish for peace. The noun before it is almost always a feeling word. 心をこめて is a very common set phrase meaning 'with all one's heart / carefully and sincerely'.

Common mistakes

  • Using the wrong particle. ✗ 心がこめて歌った → ✓ 心をこめて歌った. こめる takes を: you put (こめる) a feeling into something.
  • Using をこめて directly before a noun. ✗ 感謝をこめてプレゼント → ✓ 感謝をこめたプレゼント (a present full of thanks). To modify a noun, use をこめた.

How it's different from similar grammar

1
〜ために (for / in order to)
ために tells you the purpose or the person you do something for: 家族のために働いている (I work for my family). をこめて tells you what feeling is put into the action: 家族への感謝をこめて料理を作った (I cooked with thanks to my family in it). The two are often used together: 母のために、心をこめて作った.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-choice questions, をこめて is often mixed with をきっかけに, を中心に and を通して. The easiest hint is the noun before the blank: 心, 愛, 感謝, 願い, 気持ち and 思い almost always go with をこめて. In sentence-ordering questions, remember 感謝の気持ちをこめて + verb, and をこめた + noun. In reading passages, you will see it in letters, speeches and messages.
