〜につれて

につれて

As ... (changes), ...

〜につれて shows that when one thing changes little by little, another thing also changes little by little: 'as time passes, the town changes'. Both halves are gradual changes, so the second half often ends with 〜なる, 〜てくる, 〜ていく or 〜ようになる. It describes a change that happens naturally, so it usually does not end with a request or the speaker's plan.

時間がたつにつれて、町の様子が変わってきた。

じかんがたつにつれて、まちのようすがかわってきた。

As time went by, the town began to look different.

Structure

Verb dictionary form + につれて (年をとるにつれて). Noun that shows a change + につれて (成長につれて, 時代の変化につれて). Written form: につれ. The verb before it is usually a verb of change (なる, 増える, 上がる, たつ, 近づく).

Common mistakes

3
  • Using につれて for one-time actions in time order. ✗ 大学を卒業するにつれて、会社に入った → ✓ 大学を卒業して、会社に入った. につれて needs a gradual change in both halves, not one event followed by another.
  • Ending with a request or the speaker's own decision. ✗ 寒くなるにつれて、コートを着てください → ✓ 寒くなったら、コートを着てください. につれて describes a change that happens by itself, so a request or command after it usually sounds unnatural.
  • Using the た-form before につれて. ✗ 年をとったにつれて → ✓ 年をとるにつれて. The verb before につれて is in the dictionary form, even when the whole sentence is in the past.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜にしたがって (as / in accordance with)
For gradual change, the two mean almost the same: 人口が増えるにしたがって、町が大きくなった and 人口が増えるにつれて、町が大きくなった (As the population grew, the town got bigger). But にしたがって also means 'following (a rule or instruction)': 先生の説明にしたがって、機械を動かした (I ran the machine following the teacher's instructions). につれて does not have this second meaning.
〜ば〜ほど (the more ..., the more ...)
ば〜ほど states a general rule about degree and works with adjectives too: 部屋は広ければ広いほどいい (The bigger the room, the better). につれて follows a verb or a noun, not an adjective, and describes a change that actually goes on over time: 駅に近づくにつれて、人が多くなった (As we got closer to the station, there were more people).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-choice questions, につれて is often placed next to によって, について and にとって. Look for a verb of change before the blank (増える, 上がる, なる) and a change in the second half (〜なる, 〜てくる, 〜ようになる). In sentence-ordering questions, remember the dictionary form + につれて. Reading passages about society and daily life often use につれて to describe trends.
