〜とともに
とともに
Together with / at the same time as / as ... changes
とともに has three main uses. With a person, it means 'together with' and is a more formal way to say と一緒に. With an event, it means 'at the same time as' (卒業とともに = right when I graduate). With a change, it means 'as A changes, B changes too', like につれて. It sounds formal, so it is common in speeches, news and writing.
家族とともに、新しい町で暮らしています。
かぞくとともに、あたらしいまちでくらしています。
I live in a new town together with my family.
Structure
Together with: noun (a person or group) + とともに (家族とともに). At the same time as: noun of an event + とともに (卒業とともに), or verb dictionary form + とともに (ドアが開くとともに). As ... changes: verb dictionary form + とともに (町が大きくなるとともに), or noun + とともに (時代とともに). Adjectives are used through 〜くなる / 〜になる. The verb is not put in the た-form before とともに, and in ordinary sentences it is not put in the ます-form either. The kanji form is 〜と共に.

Common mistakes
3
- Putting the verb in the た-form or ます-form. とともに follows the dictionary form or a noun: ×春が来たとともに and ×春が来ますとともに are wrong. Say 春が来るとともに, or use a noun: 春とともに.
- Using とともに for plans with friends in everyday talk. あした、友だちとともに映画を見に行くよ is understandable but sounds too stiff for a casual chat. In conversation, use と一緒に: あした、友だちと一緒に映画を見に行くよ.
- In the 'change' use, following it with a habit instead of a change. ×年をとるとともに、毎日散歩します does not work, because 毎日散歩します is not a change. The second part must also change: 年をとるとともに、散歩する時間が増えた.

- につれて (as ... changes)
- For a gradual change, both can be used: 年をとるにつれて/年をとるとともに、体が弱くなる (As you get older, your body gets weaker). But につれて is only for changes. とともに can also mark a single event happening at the same moment, as in 試合の終わりとともに、雨が降り出した (The rain started just as the match ended), and a person you do something with. につれて cannot be used in these two ways.
- と一緒に (together with, everyday)
- Both mean 'together with a person'. と一緒に is the everyday expression: 兄と一緒に買い物に行った (I went shopping with my older brother). とともに sounds formal and is used in speeches, news and writing: 町の人たちとともに、町をきれいにしていきます (We will keep the town clean together with the people of the town).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In the N3 grammar section, とともに is often a fill-in-the-blank choice next to につれて, にしたがって and によって. A useful clue: if the word before the blank is a one-time event such as 卒業, 結婚 or a bell ringing, only とともに fits among those choices. In reading passages, it appears in formal writing such as notices and speeches (社員とともに, 時代とともに).
