〜一方だ

いっぽうだ

Keep -ing more and more (a change that goes in only one direction)

〜一方だ says that a change keeps going in one direction and shows no sign of stopping. It is used mostly for changes the speaker is not happy about, such as prices going up or health getting worse. It is a little formal and is common in news and written Japanese.

この町の人口は減る一方です。

このまちのじんこうはへるいっぽうです。

The population of this town keeps going down.

Common mistakes

3
  • Using the た-form or ている before 一方だ. ✗ 人口は減った一方だ / ✗ 減っている一方だ → ✓ 人口は減る一方だ. The verb stays in the dictionary form. Put the tense at the end: 減る一方だった.
  • Using a verb that does not show change. ✗ 弟は毎日ゲームをする一方だ → ✓ 弟は毎日ゲームばかりしている. 〜一方だ needs a verb like 増える, 減る or 〜くなる.
  • Attaching 一方だ directly to an adjective. ✗ 野菜が高い一方だ → ✓ 野菜が高くなる一方だ. Change the adjective into 〜くなる / 〜になる first.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜一方(で) (on the other hand)
〜一方(で) joins two clauses and contrasts them: この町は交通が便利な一方で、家賃が高い (This town has good transport, but on the other hand the rent is high). 〜一方だ comes at the end of a sentence after a verb of change and means 'more and more': この町の家賃は上がる一方だ. If a second clause follows, it is the contrast pattern; if the sentence ends there, it is the 'keeps changing' pattern.
〜つづける (continue doing)
〜つづける simply says that an action or change continues, and it works with many kinds of verbs: 3時間歩きつづけた. 〜一方だ is only for changes, and it adds the feeling that things move in one direction only and cannot be stopped: ごみが増えつづけている is a plain report, while ごみは増える一方だ sounds worried.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar questions, the key point is the form before 一方だ: only the dictionary form of a change verb is correct, so choices like 増えた一方だ or 高い一方だ are traps. In sentence-ordering questions, 一方だ (or 一方です) comes at the very end. In reading passages about society (population, prices, the environment), 〜一方だ tells you that the writer sees a trend as a problem.
