〜ぶり

ぶり

For the first time in ... / after an interval of ...

ぶり shows that something happens again after that length of time. For that whole time it did not happen, and the speaker usually feels that the time was long. 5年ぶりに国へ帰った means 'I went back to my country for the first time in five years'. It is about one event that happens again now, not about a repeated schedule.

5年ぶりに国へ帰りました。

ごねんぶりにくにへかえりました。

I went back to my country for the first time in five years.

Structure

Length of time (5年, 3か月, 1週間, 半年, 何年) + ぶりに + verb. Before a noun: 〜ぶりの + noun (10年ぶりの大雪). At the end of a sentence: 〜ぶりだ / 〜ぶりです. 久しぶり (after a long time) is a fixed word made with the same ぶり.

Common mistakes

3
  • Using ぶり for how long you have been doing something. ✕ もう3年ぶり日本語を勉強しています → ○ もう3年(間)日本語を勉強しています. ぶり is used when something did not happen for that time and then happens again.
  • Using ぶりに with a negative verb. ✕ 田中さんに3年ぶりに会っていません → ○ 田中さんに3年(も)会っていません. With ぶりに, the event really happens: ○ 田中さんに3年ぶりに会いました.
  • Using な or no particle before a noun. ✕ 10年ぶりな大雪 ✕ 10年ぶり大雪 → ○ 10年ぶりの大雪. Also, in standard Japanese ぶり usually follows a length of time (1年), not a point in time (去年).

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜おきに (at regular intervals)
おきに shows a regular, repeated schedule: 兄は2年おきに国へ帰る (My older brother goes back to his country at two-year intervals). ぶり is about one event that happens again after a gap, and it often shows the feeling 'at last' or 'it has been so long': 兄は2年ぶりに国へ帰った (My older brother went back to his country for the first time in two years).
Length of time + まえに (... ago)
4年まえに only tells when something happened, counting back from now: 4年まえに京都へ行った (I went to Kyoto four years ago). 4年ぶりに tells that it happens again now, after four years without it: 4年ぶりに京都へ行った (I went to Kyoto for the first time in four years). In the second sentence, the trip is recent, and the last trip before it was four years earlier.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-choice questions, ぶりに appears with おきに, ごとに, and までに after a length of time. Choose ぶりに when the sentence is about one event that happens again (会った, 帰った, 晴れた), and おきに or ごとに when it is about a regular habit. In reading and listening, ぶり tells you that the thing did NOT happen during that time, which is often the point of a question. 久しぶり is also very common in listening conversations.
