〜おきに

おきに

At intervals of / every other

おきに comes from 置く (to leave) and means 'leaving that much in between'. With days, weeks, months, years, and things you count one by one (lines, seats), that number is skipped: 1日おきに is 'every other day', and 1行おきに is 'on every other line'. With minutes, hours, and distance, it usually means the same as ごとに: 10分おきに is 'every 10 minutes'.

1日おきにジムに通っています。

いちにちおきにジムにかよっています。

I go to the gym every other day.

Structure

Number + counter (time, distance, or things in a line) + おきに: 1日おきに, 10分おきに, 5メートルおきに, 1行おきに, 一つおきに. It does not follow a plain noun or a verb.

Common mistakes

3
  • Reading 1日おきに as 'every day'. It means 'every other day': if you go on Monday, the next time is Wednesday. For 'every day', say 毎日. In the same way, 1週間おきに is usually 'every other week'.
  • Using おきに after a plain noun or a verb. ✕ 国おきに習慣が違う → ○ 国ごとに習慣が違う. ✕ 会うおきに → ○ 会うたびに. おきに follows only a number + counter.
  • Putting の or に before おきに. ✕ 1日のおきに ✕ 10分におきに → ○ 1日おきに ○ 10分おきに.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜ごとに (every / each)
With minutes, hours, and distance, the two usually mean the same: 30分おきに = 30分ごとに. With days, weeks, months, and years, they differ: 3日ごとに掃除する is once in three days, but 3日おきに掃除する leaves three days in between, so it is once in four days. ごとに can also follow a plain noun or a verb (グループごとに, 会うごとに), but おきに cannot.
Period + に + 〜回 (number of times in a period)
Period + に + 〜回 only says how often, and it is the clearest way to give a frequency: 1週間に2回泳ぐ (I swim twice a week). おきに says how much time is left between one time and the next, so the schedule is regular: 1日おきに泳ぐ (I swim every other day, for example Monday, Wednesday, Friday). If you are not sure a listener will understand 1日おきに, 2日に1回 gives the same idea.

How this shows up on the JLPT

The classic test point is the counting: 1日おきに is every other day, not every day. Reading and listening questions may ask on which day or how many times something happens, so count carefully. In grammar-choice questions, おきに is set against ごとに, たびに, and ぶりに; remember that only a number + counter can come before おきに. With 分 and 時間, treat おきに and ごとに as the same.
