について shows the subject matter of talking, writing, thinking or research: 'about X'. It attaches directly to a noun, with no の. The verb that follows is an activity that has content, such as 話す, 質問する or 調べる. To describe a noun, as in 'a book about X', use についての.
§1Structure
Noun + について + verb of speaking, thinking or studying (話す, 聞く, 書く, 考える, 調べる, 説明する, etc.). Before a noun: noun + についての + noun. As a topic: noun + については. A verb or clause must first be turned into a noun with こと: 〜ことについて.

§3Common mistakes
- Forgetting の when について describes a noun. 日本の歴史について本 is wrong. について connects to a verb, so before a noun you need についての: 日本の歴史についての本.
- Using について for the other meaning of English 'about' (= approximately). 'About 20 people came' is not 20人について来ました. For an approximate number, use ぐらい / くらい: 20人ぐらい来ました.
- Attaching について directly to a verb. 日本で働くについて話しました is wrong. Make the verb a noun with こと first: 日本で働くことについて話しました.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- を (direct object)
- With を, the noun is the thing the action is done to. With について, the noun is the subject matter of the talk or study. 先生は英語を話しました means the teacher spoke English (the language used). 先生は英語について話しました means the teacher talked about English, perhaps in Japanese. In the same way, 住所を聞く asks for the address itself, while 町について聞く asks various things about the town.
- に関して / に関する (regarding, formal)
- The meaning is almost the same, but に関して is more formal and appears in news, business and official writing: この事件に関して、警察が調べています. In everyday conversation and at N4 level, について is the normal choice: 週末の予定について友だちと話した. Before a noun, について becomes についての, while に関して becomes に関する.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N4 grammar questions, について is usually chosen from a group of に-phrases (によると, にとって, について) or plain particles. Check the verb: if it is about speaking, asking, writing, thinking or researching, について fits. Sentence-ordering questions like to test についての + noun, so watch for a の that must sit between について and the noun. In reading passages, 〜について often appears in the question itself (〜について、正しいものはどれですか), so you need to read it quickly.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the word that fits the blank: 授業で、日本の祭り__発表しました。
じゅぎょうで、にほんのまつり__はっぴょうしました。
2. Which sentence correctly says 'I borrowed a book about Japanese cooking'?
3. Which sentence uses について correctly?
