〜に対して(対象)
にたいして
Toward / to (the target of an action or feeling)
〜に対して shows the person or thing that an action, an attitude or a feeling is aimed at: 'toward', 'to' or 'against'. It is used for how you treat people (kind, polite, strict), how you respond (answer, protest), and what you feel (angry, grateful). It is a little more formal than the simple particle に. (に対して for contrast, 'whereas', is a separate pattern.)
店員はお客さんに対して、いつも丁寧に話します。
てんいんはおきゃくさんにたいして、いつもていねいにはなします。
The shop staff always speak politely to customers.
Structure
Noun + に対して + verb or adjective (お客さんに対して丁寧だ, 質問に対して答える). With は or も: に対しては, に対しても (だれに対しても). Before a noun: Noun + に対する + noun (計画に対する意見); に対しての + noun is also used. The word after it is usually an action or attitude aimed at the noun: 答える, 反対する, 怒る, 親切だ, 厳しい.

- Using に対して for the topic of talk or study. The topic of 調べる, 話す or 書く takes について or に関して: ✕ 日本の文化に対して調べています → ○ 日本の文化について調べています. に対して is for the target of an action or attitude.
- Using に対して before a noun. Before a noun, use に対する (or に対しての): ✕ 客に対して態度 → ○ 客に対する態度 (the attitude toward customers).
- Using に対して for a simple receiver or place. For giving, sending, or going somewhere, the particle に is enough, and に対して usually sounds unnatural: 友だちに手紙を書いた, not 友だちに対して手紙を書いた.

- 〜に対して (contrast: whereas)
- The same words have a second use. In the contrast use, に対して (often のに対して) joins two sentences to show that they are opposite: 姉が明るいのに対して、妹はおとなしい (My older sister is cheerful, whereas my younger sister is quiet). In the target use on this page, the noun is the one that the action or feeling is aimed at: 姉は妹に対して厳しい (My older sister is strict with my younger sister).
- 〜にとって (for, from the standpoint of)
- Both can be translated as 'for' or 'to', but they work differently. にとって gives the person from whose point of view something is judged: 父にとって、この写真は宝物だ (For my father, this photo is a treasure). に対して gives the person that an action or attitude is aimed at: 父は私に対して優しい (My father is kind to me). If there is an action or a way of treating someone, use に対して.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In the grammar-form section, に対して is usually tested against にとって, について, に関して and によって. Look at the word after the blank: an action or attitude aimed at the noun (答える, 反対する, 親切だ, 厳しい) points to に対して. If the blank is followed by a noun, choose に対する. In reading passages, also watch for the contrast use (Aのに対して、B), which has a different meaning.

Choose the best expression for the blank: 町の人たちの協力__、市長はお礼を言った。
まちのひとたちのきょうりょく__、しちょうはおれいをいった。
