こと after a verb in the dictionary form turns the verb phrase into a noun, like 'reading books' or 'to read books' in English. A verb cannot come directly before です, が or は, so you add こと first. The most common N5 use is to talk about hobbies and dreams: わたしの趣味は〜ことです.
§1Structure
Verb dictionary form + こと. Common sentence patterns: Noun は + verb dictionary form + ことです (趣味は本を読むことです). Verb dictionary form + こと + が好きです / は楽しいです. Negative: 〜ことじゃありません. Past: 〜ことでした.
§2Examples
わたしの趣味は音楽を聞くことです。
わたしのしゅみはおんがくをきくことです。

§3Common mistakes
- Ending the sentence with a verb, or putting a verb directly before です. ✗ わたしの趣味は音楽を聞きます。 ✗ わたしの趣味は音楽を聞くです。 'My hobby' is a thing, so the other side of は〜です must be a noun too. Add こと: ○ わたしの趣味は音楽を聞くことです。
- Using the ます-form before こと. ✗ 趣味は写真を撮りますことです。 Use the dictionary form, even in a polite sentence: ○ 趣味は写真を撮ることです。
- Adding こと to a noun. ✗ 趣味は音楽ことです。 A noun does not need こと: ○ 趣味は音楽です。 Only a verb needs it: ○ 趣味は音楽を聞くことです。
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜の (nominalizer)
- の (N4) can also turn a verb into a noun. Before 好きです, both are fine: 絵をかくことが好きです / 絵をかくのが好きです. の sounds more conversational. But right before です, use こと, not の: ○ 趣味は絵をかくことです。 ✗ 趣味は絵をかくのです。
- 〜ことができる (can do)
- 〜ことができます uses the same こと, but the whole pattern means 'can': ギターを弾くことができます (I can play the guitar). 趣味はギターを弾くことです only says what your hobby is: 'My hobby is playing the guitar.' In both patterns, the verb before こと is in the dictionary form.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N5 grammar questions, the typical item is わたしの趣味は映画を__です, and the choices are 見る / 見ること / 見ます / 見て. You need a noun before です, so the answer is 見ること. In sentence-ordering questions, keep the order: object を + verb dictionary form + こと + です (or が好きです). In reading passages about self-introductions, 〜ことです tells you the writer's hobby or dream.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the words that fit the blank: わたしの趣味は映画を__です。
わたしのしゅみはえいがを__です。
2. Which sentence is correct?
3. In 泳ぐことが好きです, what does こと do?
およぐことがすきです
