〜わりに(は)

わりに

Considering / for (more or less than expected)

〜わりに says that, considering A, the result B is more or less than you would expect. A is often a degree or amount (price, age, how much you studied), and B is the speaker's evaluation. It can be positive (値段のわりにおいしい: tasty for the price) or negative (たくさん勉強したわりに点が悪い).

このレストランは、値段のわりにおいしい。

このレストランは、ねだんのわりにおいしい。

This restaurant is tasty for the price.

Structure

Verb (plain form) + わりに: よく食べるわりに, 勉強したわりに. い-adjective + わりに: 広いわりに. な-adjective + な + わりに: 便利なわりに. Noun + の + わりに: 値段のわりに, 年のわりに. わりには (with は) is also common and a little stronger.

Examples

  • この町は便利なわりに、人が少ない。

Common mistakes

3
  • Forgetting の after a noun or な after a な-adjective. ✗ 値段わりに → ✓ 値段のわりに. ✗ 便利わりに → ✓ 便利なわりに.
  • Using わりに when the result is just what you expect. ✗ たくさん練習したわりに、上手になった → ✓ たくさん練習したので、上手になった. わりに is only natural when B is different from what A makes you expect.
  • Confusing わりに with かわりに ('instead of'). ✗ 肉のわりに魚を食べた → ✓ 肉のかわりに魚を食べた (I ate fish instead of meat).

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜にしては (for a ...)
Both mean 'for / considering', and sometimes both are possible: 小学生のわりに背が高い and 小学生にしては背が高い. But their connections are different: わりに can follow adjectives (広いわりに, 便利なわりに), while にしては usually follows a noun or a verb, not an adjective. わりに fits well with a degree or amount (値段, 年, how much you did); にしては fits well with a fact or a group, and what is normal for it (初めて作ったにしては, 九月にしては).
〜のに (even though)
のに says that the result is the opposite of what you expected, often with surprise or complaint: 毎日練習したのに、試合に負けた. わりに says that the result is more or less than the level you expected: 毎日練習したわりに、あまり上手になっていない (I practiced every day, but I haven't improved as much as I should have). わりに also works after a noun of degree or amount with の: 値段のわりに (for the price), 年のわりに (for his age).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar questions, わりに is often tested with にしては, かわりに and のに. Check the word before the blank: an adjective (広い, 便利な) points to わりに, not にしては. Also check the connection: noun + の + わりに, な-adjective + な + わりに. In reading passages, 〜わりに shows the writer's evaluation (good or bad) compared with what was expected.
