〜としたら/〜とすれば/〜とすると

としたら/とすれば/とすると

Supposing that / if it is true that

'A としたら B' means 'if we suppose that A is true (or will happen), then B'. A is something imagined, or information you have heard but are not sure about, and B is often a guess, judgment, question or wish. The three forms mean almost the same thing; としたら is the most common in conversation, and とすれば / とすると sound a little more logical. They are usually not used for things that will surely happen.

もし一億円あるとしたら、何をしたいですか。

もしいちおくえんあるとしたら、なにをしたいですか。

If you had 100 million yen, what would you want to do?

Common mistakes

3
  • Adding な after nouns and な-adjectives. ✗ 暇なとすれば / 先生なとしたら → ✓ 暇だとすれば / 先生だとしたら. Use だ, just as in a plain sentence (暇だ, 先生だ).
  • Using としたら for something that will surely happen, such as 'when I arrive'. ✗ 駅に着いたとしたら、電話してください → ✓ 駅に着いたら、電話してください. としたら is for an imagined situation.
  • Mixing up としたら ('if we suppose') and としても ('even if'). ✗ たとえ雨が降るとしたら、出かけます → ✓ たとえ雨が降るとしても、出かけます. For 'even if', use としても.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
たら (if / when)
たら can be used both for imagined situations and for things that will surely happen: 駅に着いたら、電話します (When I get to the station, I'll call). としたら is only for a situation you imagine or are not sure about, and it adds the feeling 'let's suppose': もし会社をやめるとしたら、何がしたい? (If you were to quit your job, what would you want to do?).
としても (even if)
Both start by supposing something, but the result is different. としたら leads to a result that follows from the supposition: 明日雨だとしたら、試合は中止だろう (If it rains tomorrow, the game will probably be canceled). としても says the result does not change: 明日雨だとしても、試合は行われる (Even if it rains tomorrow, the game will be held).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In the grammar section, としたら / とすれば often appears with もし or 仮に, and the answer choices may include としても, としては and として; decide whether the sentence means 'if' or 'even if'. Also check the connection 名詞・な形容詞+だ+としたら. In reading, 〜とすれば often introduces the writer's reasoning ('if this is true, then ...').
