どうしても

どうしても

no matter what / by all means

With a negative, どうしても says that something does not work or cannot be done, even though the speaker has tried many ways. With a wish or a need, it says that the speaker wants or needs something very strongly and will not give up. With 〜てしまう, it means the speaker cannot stop themselves from doing something. It shows strong feeling, so it is common when you explain a difficulty or make a serious request.

この漢字の読み方が、どうしても思い出せません。

このかんじのよみかたが、どうしてもおもいだせません。

I just can't remember how to read this kanji.

Structure

どうしても is an adverb placed before the predicate. (1) どうしても + negative, very often the negative potential form (〜ない / 〜ません / 〜られない / 〜できない): 'just cannot ..., no matter how hard I try'. (2) どうしても + a strong wish or need (〜たい / 〜てほしい / 〜なければならない / 〜ないといけない): 'really, at any cost'. (3) どうしても + 〜てしまう: 'can't help doing'. The verb after it keeps its own normal form.

Common mistakes

3
  • Mixing up どうしても with どうして ('why'). どうしても is not a question word. ✗ どうしても昨日来なかったの? (when you want to ask 'Why didn't you come yesterday?') → ✓ どうして昨日来なかったの?
  • Using ぜひ with a negative when you mean 'just can't'. ぜひ is used for wishes, requests and invitations, not for saying that something is impossible. ✗ ぜひ思い出せません → ✓ どうしても思い出せません.
  • Using どうしても with an invitation (〜ましょう). This sounds unnatural; ぜひ is used for invitations. ✗ どうしても一緒に行きましょう → ✓ ぜひ一緒に行きましょう. (To show your own strong wish, say どうしても一緒に行きたいです.)

How it's different from similar grammar

2
ぜひ (by all means, please do)
Both can go with a wish, but ぜひ is used for wishes, requests and invitations, such as ぜひ遊びに来てください (Please do come and visit). どうしても adds the feeling that there is no other way or that the speaker won't give up, as in どうしても留学したい (I really want to study abroad, whatever it takes). Only どうしても can say that something is impossible: このふたがどうしても開かない (This lid just won't open). ぜひ cannot be used there.
どうして / なぜ (why)
どうして is a question word that asks for a reason: どうして遅れたんですか (Why were you late?). Adding も makes a different word: どうしても does not ask anything. It shows that something is impossible or that a wish is very strong: どうしても時間に間に合わない (I just can't make it on time).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In the N3 grammar section, どうしても appears in fill-in-the-blank questions where you choose it from other adverbs such as ぜひ, きっと or なかなか. Look at the end of the sentence: a negative potential form (〜られない, 〜できない) or a strong wish (〜たい, 〜なければならない) is the signal. In sentence-building questions, remember that どうしても comes before the verb phrase. In reading, どうしても〜ない often explains a problem the writer could not solve.
