少しも〜ない/ちっとも〜ない
すこしも〜ない/ちっとも〜ない
not at all / not even a little
少しも〜ない and ちっとも〜ない mean 'not at all, not even a little'. They make the negative complete. ちっとも is casual and is used in conversation, often with a feeling of complaint or surprise. 少しも can be used in both speech and writing, and 全く〜ない sounds the most formal. Note that 全く can also be used in affirmative sentences (全く同じだ, 'exactly the same'), but 少しも and ちっとも are used with a negative.

Common mistakes
3
- Using 少しも or ちっとも with an affirmative predicate. They need a negative: ✗ 今日はちっとも寒いです → ✓ 今日はちっとも寒くないです.
- Dropping も. 少し alone means 'a little', so it does not make 'not at all': ✗ 少しわかりませんでした (meaning 'I didn't understand at all') → ✓ 少しもわかりませんでした.
- Using ちっとも in formal writing or a speech. ちっとも is conversational; in formal situations use 少しも or 全く: 全く問題はありません.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- ぜんぜん〜ない (not at all)
- The meaning is almost the same, and ぜんぜん is the most common word in everyday speech. 少しも stresses 'not even a small amount', and ちっとも often adds a feeling of complaint or surprise: 待っているのに、バスがちっとも来ない (I'm waiting, but the bus just won't come). ぜんぜん is also used with a few words that are already negative in meaning, such as ぜんぜん違う (completely different).
- あまり〜ない (not very)
- あまり〜ない is a partial negative: there is some, but not much. 少しも〜ない is a complete negative: there is none. このカレーはあまり辛くない means it is a little spicy, but not very. このカレーは少しも辛くない means it is not spicy at all.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar questions, 少しも and ちっとも are chosen when the sentence ends in a negative and the meaning is 'not at all'. Distractors are often 少し (without も), あまり or とても, so check whether the meaning is complete or only partial. In listening and reading, ちっとも〜ない often shows that the speaker is unhappy or surprised, which can help you answer questions about their feelings.
