JLPT N4

〜(よ)うと思う

ようとおもう

I think I will / I'm thinking of doing

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

Tells the listener what you intend to do. 〜(よ)うと思います often shows a decision you are making now or have just made, and 〜(よ)うと思っています shows that you have had the idea for some time. To talk about another person's intention, 〜(よ)うと思っています is normally used, not 〜(よ)うと思います. It sounds softer and less fixed than つもりです.

§1Structure

Verb volitional form + と思う / と思っている. Volitional form: Group I 行く → 行こう, 買う → 買おう; Group II 食べる → 食べよう; Group III する → しよう, 来る → 来よう (こよう).

§2Examples

    こんばんははやくねようとおもいます。

I think I'll go to bed early tonight.

    たかいので、いまはあたらしいパソコンをかおうとはおもいません。

  • この店はおいしいから、また来ようと思った。

    このみせはおいしいから、またこようとおもった。

This restaurant is good, so I thought I would come again.

§3Common mistakes

  • Using the dictionary form before と思う when you want to tell your intention. 日本へ行くと思います sounds like a guess ('I think someone will go to Japan'), not your own plan. For your intention, use the volitional form: 日本へ行こうと思います.
  • Making the volitional form wrongly, or using the polite form before と思う: 食べろうと思います, 行くようと思います, 行きましょうと思います are all wrong. The correct forms are 食べようと思います and 行こうと思います. Note that 来よう is read こよう, not きよう.
  • Using 〜(よ)うと思います for another person: リンさんは帰ろうと思います sounds unnatural as a statement. For a third person, say リンさんは帰ろうと思っています (or add a hearsay ending such as 〜と言っていました).

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜つもりです (intend to)
〜(よ)うと思う sounds like a fresh or still soft idea: 今度の休みに旅行に行こうと思います (I'm thinking I'll take a trip on my next holiday). つもりです sounds like a firmer decision made earlier: 来月旅行に行くつもりです (I intend to take a trip next month — it is already decided in my mind). Also, つもり follows the dictionary or ない form (行くつもり, 行かないつもり), while と思う follows the volitional form (行こうと思う).
Volitional form alone (行こう)
Said to a listener, the volitional form alone is usually an invitation: いっしょに帰ろう (Let's go home together). When you add と思う, it is no longer an invitation; it tells the listener your own intention: 今日は早く帰ろうと思う (I think I'll go home early today).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In the N4 grammar-form questions, you often have to choose the correct verb form before と思っています: the answer is the volitional form (しよう, 行こう), and the wrong choices are the dictionary form, the ます form or a broken form like 行くよう. In sentence-building questions, remember the fixed order 〈volitional form〉+ と + 思って + います. In reading passages, 〜(よ)うと思っています tells you what the writer plans to do, which is often asked in the questions.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the form that fits the blank: 来月から、毎朝ジョギングを__と思っています。

    らいげつから、まいあさジョギングを__とおもっています。

  • 2. In which sentence does the speaker tell his or her own intention?

  • 3. What does 「日本で働こうと思っています。」 tell us?

    にほんではたらこうとおもっています。
