〜予定だ

Verb dictionary form / ない form + 予定だ; Noun + の + 予定だ. Polite: 予定です. For a plan in the past that changed: 〜予定でした.

• 来週、大阪へ出張する予定です。

  らいしゅう、おおさかへしゅっちょうするよていです。

  I'm scheduled to go on a business trip to Osaka next week.

• 会議は3時に終わる予定です。

  かいぎはさんじにおわるよていです。

  The meeting is scheduled to end at three o'clock.

• 旅行は1週間の予定です。

  りょこうはいっしゅうかんのよていです。

  The trip is planned to be one week long.

• 飛行機は何時に着く予定ですか。

  ひこうきはなんじにつくよていですか。

  What time is the plane scheduled to arrive?

• 午前中に着く予定でしたが、電車が遅れました。

  ごぜんちゅうにつくよていでしたが、でんしゃがおくれました。

  I was supposed to arrive in the morning, but the train was late.

• 今年の夏は国へ帰らない予定です。

  ことしのなつはくにへかえらないよていです。

  I'm not planning to go back to my country this summer.

• 来月、駅の前に新しいスーパーができる予定だ。

  らいげつ、えきのまえにあたらしいスーパーができるよていだ。

  A new supermarket is scheduled to open in front of the station next month.

• 「日曜日は何をする予定？」「友だちと買い物に行く予定だよ。」

  「にちようびはなにをするよてい？」「ともだちとかいものにいくよていだよ。」

  "What are you planning to do on Sunday?" "I'm planning to go shopping with a friend."

• Using the ます form or the て form before 予定: 行きます予定です and 行って予定です are wrong. Use the dictionary form (or the ない form): 行く予定です, 行かない予定です.
• Forgetting の after a noun or using another word instead: 出張は来週予定です and 出張は来週な予定です should be 出張は来週の予定です.
• Putting the verb in the past tense to talk about a past plan: 10時に着いた予定です is wrong. The verb stays in the dictionary form and 予定です changes: 10時に着く予定でした (I was scheduled to arrive at ten).

〜つもりです (intend to)

つもり shows a person's own will: 来月、日本へ行くつもりです (I intend to go to Japan next month — my personal decision). 予定 shows an arranged schedule, and it does not matter whose will it is: 来月、日本へ出張する予定です (I'm scheduled to go to Japan on business next month). For things that have no will, only 予定 is natural: 電車は3時に着く予定です is fine, but 電車は3時に着くつもりです is wrong.

〜（よ）うと思う (I think I will)

〜（よ）うと思う is a soft idea in the speaker's mind, and nothing may be arranged yet: 夏休みに北海道へ行こうと思っています (I'm thinking of going to Hokkaido in the summer vacation). 予定 sounds like the date or the arrangements are already fixed: 8月10日に北海道へ行く予定です (I'm scheduled to go to Hokkaido on August 10).

In N4 grammar-form questions, 予定 is tested through the form before it: dictionary form for verbs (行く予定) and の for nouns (来週の予定). It also appears as a choice next to つもり, so check whether the subject has a will; a train, a meeting or a shop cannot take つもり. In reading and information-search questions such as schedules and notices, 〜予定です marks what is planned, and 〜予定でしたが tells you that the plan changed.
