〜ように(前置き・同様)

ように

as (you know / I said / shown in ...)

This ように means 'as' or 'in the same way as'. It points to something the listener already knows, has heard, or can see (what someone said, a picture, a table, a manual), and the main clause says something that matches it. It is often used as an opening phrase before the main point, as in ご存じのように (as you know) and 前にも言ったように (as I said before). It also tells someone to do something in the same way as a model: この絵のように (like this picture).

皆さんもご存じのように、来月から電車の料金が上がります。

みなさんもごぞんじのように、らいげつからでんしゃのりょうきんがあがります。

As you all know, train fares will go up from next month.

Structure

Verb plain form (dictionary form, た form, ている form) + ように (前に話したように, 皆さんも知っているように). Noun + の + ように (この図のように, ご存じのように). With a negative result, 〜ようには is often used (思ったようにはできなかった).

Common mistakes

3
  • Leaving out の after a noun, or adding の after a verb. ✗ この図ように折ってください。 → ○ この図のように折ってください。 ✗ 前に話したのように、… → ○ 前に話したように、…
  • Using ような instead of ように. ような must be followed by a noun, so it cannot be used as an opening phrase that goes with the whole sentence. ✗ 先週お知らせしたような、運動会は中止です。 → ○ 先週お知らせしたように、運動会は中止です。
  • Reading every plain form + ように as a purpose. In 忘れないようにメモする, ように is a purpose ('so that I will not forget'). In メモに書いてあるように買い物をする, it means 'as is written in the memo'. If the part before ように is information that already exists (said, written, shown, known), it means 'as'.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜とおりに (exactly as)
Both can mean 'as', and in many sentences either one can be used. 〜とおりに stresses that the action follows the model exactly, step by step, without changing anything: 説明書のとおりに組み立てた (I put it together exactly as the manual says). 〜ように is looser and only says that the two things match or are similar. Opening phrases for shared knowledge normally use ように: ご存じのように (as you know).
〜ように (purpose: so that)
Purpose ように comes after a result you want, usually a potential verb, a ない form, or a verb you cannot control: みんなに聞こえるように、大きい声で話した (I spoke loudly so that everyone could hear). ように meaning 'as' comes after something already said, written, shown, or known: 先生に言われたように、大きい声で話した (I spoke loudly, as the teacher had told me to).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar questions, this ように is tested with choices such as ような, ために, and とおり, often in fixed opening phrases (ご存じのように, 前に言ったように, 図のように). Check the word before the blank: a noun needs の. In sentence-ordering questions, の, よう, and に may be separate pieces. In reading passages, a phrase like 上のグラフから分かるように or 先ほど書いたように tells you that the writer is going to repeat or sum up an important point, so read the next clause carefully.
