〜ような/〜ように(例示)
ような/ように
such as / like (giving an example)
This use of ような / ように gives a concrete example to show what kind of thing you mean. In AのようなB, A is one real example of the group B: 東京のような大きい町 means 'big cities, for example Tokyo'. AのようにB gives A as a model for an action or a state: 'in the way A does'. After a verb, 〜ような + noun shows the kind of thing by describing a typical case.
東京や大阪のような大きい町に住みたいです。
とうきょうやおおさかのようなおおきいまちにすみたいです。
I want to live in a big city such as Tokyo or Osaka.
Structure
Noun + の + ような + noun (東京のような町). Noun + の + ように + verb / い-adjective / な-adjective (リンさんのように話す). Verb plain form + ような + noun (だれでも知っているような店). の is needed after a noun, but not after a verb. In casual speech, noun + みたいな / みたいに (no の) is used in the same way.

Common mistakes
3
- Leaving out の after a noun. ✗ 東京ような町 ✗ 田中さんように話す → ○ 東京のような町 ○ 田中さんのように話す. After a verb, do not add の: ✗ 子どもでも読めるのような本 → ○ 子どもでも読めるような本.
- Mixing up ような and ように. ような comes directly before a noun; ように goes with a verb or an adjective. ✗ 私も先生のような上手に書きたい。 → ○ 私も先生のように上手に書きたい。 ✗ 京都のように町 → ○ 京都のような町.
- Adding の before みたい. ✗ 東京のみたいな町 → ○ 東京みたいな町. みたいな / みたいに joins directly to the noun, while ような / ように needs の.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- まるで〜ようだ/〜みたいだ (just like, as if: comparison)
- In a comparison, A is not really a member of B; it only looks or feels similar: 今日はまるで夏のような暑さだ (Today's heat is just like summer; it is not summer). In an example, A really is one of B: 7月や8月のような暑い時期は、水をたくさん飲みましょう (In hot periods such as July and August, drink a lot of water). まるで can be added only to the comparison use.
- 〜など/〜なんか (and so on, things like)
- など simply lists examples and shows that there are others: 休みの日は、映画やドラマなどを見ます (On my days off I watch movies, dramas, and so on). AのようなB uses the example to explain what kind of B you mean, so B must be said: 休みの日は、映画やドラマのような、家で楽しめるものを見ます (... things I can enjoy at home, such as movies and dramas).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar questions, the choices are often のような, のように, ような, and みたいな. Look at the word right after the blank: a noun needs ような, and a verb or an adjective needs ように. Then look at the word before the blank: a noun needs の, a verb does not. In sentence-ordering questions, の, よう, and な are often separate pieces. In reading, AのようなB tells you that A is only an example, so the writer's point is about the whole group B.
