〜ますように

ますように

I hope ... / May ... (wish, prayer)

〜ますように is used to make a wish or say a prayer. You use it for things you cannot fully control, such as passing an exam, the weather, health, or luck. The words 祈っています (I am praying) are left out after ように, so the sentence stops there. Even when you talk to yourself or to friends, the verb before ように stays in the ます form.

試験に合格できますように。

しけんにごうかくできますように。

I hope I can pass the exam.

Structure

Verb ます form + ように (治りますように). Verb ません + ように (降りませんように). The potential form is common for your own wish: 合格できますように. The sentence ends at ように. With a verb of praying after it, the plain form is used: verb dictionary form / ない form + ように + 祈る / 願う / お願いする (勝つように祈る).

Common mistakes

3
  • Ending a wish with the plain form + ように. ✗ 試験に合格するように。 → ○ 試験に合格しますように。 / 合格できますように。 A sentence that ends in plain form + ように is usually heard as a soft instruction (忘れないように。 = 'Don't forget.'), not as a wish. The plain form is fine when 祈る or 願う follows: 合格するように祈っています.
  • Putting 〜たい before ように. ✗ 日本へ行きたいますように。 ✗ 日本へ行きたいように。 → ○ 日本へ行けますように。 The wish is already in ますように, so use the potential form, not たい.
  • Using it for something you simply decide to do yourself. ✗ 明日から毎日勉強しますように。 (about your own plan) → ○ 明日から毎日勉強するつもりです。 / 勉強するようにします。 〜ますように is for results you cannot control by will alone; for your own wish, the potential form (続けられますように) is natural.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜ように (purpose: so that)
Purpose ように uses the plain form and is followed by the action you take: 電車に遅れないように、早く家を出ます (I leave home early so that I will not miss the train). Wish ように uses the ます form and nothing follows it: 電車が遅れませんように (I hope the train is not late). If an action comes after ように, it is a purpose; if the sentence stops at ますように, it is a wish.
〜といい/〜たらいい (I hope ..., it would be nice if ...)
Both express a hope. 〜といいですね / 〜といいなあ is everyday conversation and is often said to the listener: 明日、晴れるといいですね (I hope it will be sunny tomorrow). 〜ますように sounds like a prayer and is used at shrines, in cards and messages, and when you wish strongly in your heart: 明日、晴れますように (Please let it be sunny tomorrow).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar questions, the blank usually comes at the end of a short wish, often inside quotation marks after a word such as 神社で or お願いした, and you choose between 〜ますように, 〜ために, 〜ようにする, and 〜ましょう. Remember: ます form + ように, sentence ends there. The negative wish 〜ませんように is also tested. In reading passages (letters, e-mails, New Year cards), a closing line with 〜ますように shows the writer's kind wish for the reader, not an instruction.
