〜ようになっている
ようになっている
be designed / made so that
〜ようになっている explains how a machine, a tool, or a system works: it is made so that something happens, or does not happen, automatically. It describes the design, not a person's will or effort. It is often used with 〜と or 〜ば to give the condition: 'when you do A, B happens'. You see it in instructions and in explanations of products and services.

- Using 〜ことになっている to explain how a machine works. ✗ このドアは、人が立つと開くことになっています。 → ○ このドアは、人が立つと開くようになっています。 こと is for rules and schedules decided by people; よう is for the way something is built.
- Using it for a person's effort or habit. ✗ 私は毎日野菜を食べるようになっています。 (to mean 'I try to eat vegetables every day') → ○ 私は毎日野菜を食べるようにしています。 For your own effort use 〜ようにしている.
- Using the て form or the ます stem before よう. ✗ ボタンを押すと機械が止まってようになっている。 ✗ 機械が止まりようになっている。 → ○ ボタンを押すと機械が止まるようになっている。 Use the dictionary form, the ない form, or the potential form.
How it's different from similar grammar

- 〜ようになる (come to be able to / start to)
- 〜ようになる shows a change over time, often in a person's ability or habit: 練習して、自転車に乗れるようになった (I practiced and became able to ride a bicycle). 〜ようになっている in this lesson does not talk about a change. It explains a mechanism that is always like that: この自転車は暗い所でライトがつくようになっている (This bicycle is made so that the light comes on in dark places).
- 〜ことになっている (it is the rule that)
- 〜ことになっている is a rule that people must follow: この部屋には社員しか入れないことになっている (The rule is that only employees may enter this room). 〜ようになっている is the design that makes it happen: この部屋は、社員のカードがないとドアが開かないようになっている (This room is made so that the door does not open without an employee card). People can break a rule, but a mechanism works by itself.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar questions, 〜ようになっている is a choice next to 〜ことになっている, 〜ようにしている, and 〜ようになった. If the subject is a thing (このドア, この機械, このサイト) and the sentence explains how it works, choose ようになっている. In sentence-ordering questions, よう, に, and なって are often separate pieces; the verb comes right before よう. In reading, it appears in instructions and product explanations, so understand it as 'it is built to ...', not as a change.
