〜ことにしている

ことにしている

make it a rule to / have a personal habit of

〜ことにしている shows a habit or personal rule that you decided on by yourself and still keep now. 〜ことにする is the decision itself, and している shows that the decision continues as a habit. It is used for things you can control, such as exercise, food, money, or study. With the ない form it means 'I make it a rule not to do ...'.

私は毎朝、30分歩くことにしています。

わたしはまいあさ、さんじゅっぷんあるくことにしています。

I make it a rule to walk for 30 minutes every morning.

Common mistakes

3
  • Using 〜ことにしている for a rule that other people decided (a school, a company, a country). ✗ 日本では、車は道の左側を走ることにしている。 → ○ 日本では、車は道の左側を走ることになっている。 Use 〜ことにしている only when the person in the sentence made the rule for himself or herself.
  • Using it for something that simply happens to you and that you did not decide. ✗ 私は冬になると、よくかぜをひくことにしている。 → ○ 私は冬になると、よくかぜをひく。 The pattern needs an action you choose to do or not to do.
  • Putting the た form before こと to talk about a habit. ✗ 毎朝歩いたことにしています。 → ○ 毎朝歩くことにしています。 For a habit, use the dictionary form or the ない form. (〜たことにする is a different expression that means 'to treat something as if it had happened'.)

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜ことにする (decide to do)
〜ことにする / 〜ことにした reports the decision itself, at one point in time: 来月からジムに通うことにした (I have decided to start going to the gym next month). 〜ことにしている says that the decision is already a habit you keep: 週に2回ジムに通うことにしている (I make it a rule to go to the gym twice a week). If you decided only today and have not started yet, 〜ことにした is the natural choice.
〜ことになっている (it is the rule / it is arranged that)
〜ことにしている is a rule you made for yourself: 私は家ではたばこを吸わないことにしている (I make it a rule not to smoke at home). 〜ことになっている is a rule, custom, or schedule decided by others or by a group: この建物の中ではたばこを吸ってはいけないことになっている (The rule is that you must not smoke in this building). する shows your own will, and なる shows that it was decided outside your will.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar questions, 〜ことにしている often appears as a choice together with 〜ことになっている, 〜ようにしている, and 〜ことにした. Check who made the rule (the speaker → ことにしている; a school or company → ことになっている) and look for words of habit such as 毎日, 必ず, or いつも. In sentence-ordering questions, remember that the order is always verb + こと + に + して + いる. In reading passages, it tells you about the writer's own lifestyle or policy.
