たとえ〜ても

たとえ〜ても

Even if (strong supposition)

たとえ is an adverb that makes 〜ても stronger. 'たとえ A ても、B' means 'even if A were true, B would not change'. A is usually a supposed situation, often an extreme or unwelcome one, and B is often a strong decision or something that stays the same. It is usually not used for something that has actually happened.

たとえ雨が降っても、試合は行われます。

たとえあめがふっても、しあいはおこなわれます。

Even if it rains, the match will be held.

Structure

たとえ + verb て-form + も (たとえ雨が降っても). い-adjective: たとえ + 〜くても (たとえ高くても; いい → よくても). な-adjective / noun: たとえ + 〜でも (たとえ不便でも, たとえ子どもでも). Negative: たとえ + 〜なくても (たとえ誰も来なくても). たとえ comes near the start of the clause, and the same clause ends in ても / でも.

    たとえすこしたかくても、ながくつかえるものをかいたいです。

Even if I fail, I won't regret it.

Common mistakes

3
  • Mixing up たとえ ('even if') and たとえば ('for example'). ✗ たとえば雨が降っても、行きます → ✓ たとえ雨が降っても、行きます.
  • Using たとえ with たら, ば or のに. The clause that starts with たとえ has to end in ても / でも (or としても). ✗ たとえ失敗したら → ✓ たとえ失敗しても.
  • Using たとえ for a real event in the past. たとえ is for a supposed situation, so for what really happened, use のに: ✗ 昨日はたとえ雨が降っても、出かけました → ✓ 昨日は雨が降っていたのに、出かけました.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜ても (even if / even though)
〜ても alone works both for a supposed situation (雨が降っても行きます: even if it rains, I'll go) and for a real one (薬を飲んでも熱が下がりません: I took the medicine, but my fever won't go down). Adding たとえ makes the 'even if' stronger and shows that it is only a supposition: たとえ大雨が降っても行きます (Even if it pours, I'll go). When you talk about something that really happened, like medicine you actually took, たとえ is usually left out.
いくら〜ても/どんなに〜ても (no matter how much)
いくら and どんなに focus on degree or amount: 'no matter how much'. They are also used for real, repeated experiences: いくら食べても太らない (No matter how much I eat, I don't gain weight). たとえ focuses on one supposed case, 'even supposing that...': たとえ一人になっても、この店を続けたい (Even if I end up alone, I want to keep this shop going). So たとえ goes well with situations such as 反対される, 失敗する or 一人になる, while いくら / どんなに go well with amount or degree, such as 食べる, 練習する or 忙しい.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-form questions, たとえ is often given at the start of the sentence, and you must choose the ending that goes with it: ても / でも (or としても), not たら, ば or のに. In sentence-building (★) questions, remember that たとえ comes first and ても closes the same clause. Also watch for たとえば in the choices: it means 'for example' and cannot be used in place of たとえ.
