〜さえ〜ば

さえ〜ば

If only / as long as

'A さえ B ば、C' means that if this one condition is met, C will happen, and nothing else is needed. It shows the minimum condition: 'as long as', 'all you need is'. With a past or のに ending, it shows regret that this one small thing was missing (地図さえあれば、道に迷わなかったのに). This さえ is different from the さえ that means 'even' (子どもでさえ知っている).

時間さえあれば、もっと旅行に行きたいです。

じかんさえあれば、もっとりょこうにいきたいです。

If only I had the time, I'd like to travel more.

Structure

Noun + さえ + ば-form of the word that follows: 時間さえあれば, 薬さえ飲めば, 天気さえよければ, 体さえ丈夫なら(ば). さえ takes the place of が and を (時間があれば → 時間さえあれば, 薬を飲めば → 薬さえ飲めば). When the condition is the action itself: verb ます-stem + さえ + すれば (謝りさえすれば), or する-noun + さえ + すれば (練習さえすれば). Negative condition: 〜さえ + 〜なければ (雨さえ降らなければ).

Common mistakes

3
  • Keeping が or を in front of さえ. さえ takes their place: ✗ 時間がさえあれば → ✓ 時間さえあれば; ✗ 薬をさえ飲めば → ✓ 薬さえ飲めば.
  • Putting the dictionary form of a verb before さえすれば. Use the ます-stem: ✗ 謝るさえすれば → ✓ 謝りさえすれば; ✗ 行くさえすれば → ✓ 行きさえすれば.
  • Reading さえ〜ば as 'even if'. 薬さえ飲めば means 'as long as you take the medicine (that's all you need)', not 'even if you take the medicine'. For 'even if', use 〜ても (薬を飲んでも).

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜さえ/〜でさえ (even)
Without ば, さえ means 'even' and shows an extreme example: この問題は子どもでさえ分かる (Even a child understands this problem). With ば, さえ shows the only condition you need: 名前さえ書けば、誰でも参加できる (Anyone can take part, as long as they write their name). So look at the end of the clause: if there is a ば-form (or なら), it is 'as long as'.
〜ば (if)
〜ば alone is a neutral 'if': この道をまっすぐ行けば、駅に着きます (If you go straight along this road, you'll reach the station). Adding さえ says that this one thing is enough, and nothing else is needed: この道をまっすぐ行きさえすれば、駅に着きます (All you have to do is go straight along this road). さえ〜ば often sounds encouraging or, in the past, full of regret.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-form questions, you may need to choose さえ for a blank before a ば-form, or choose the right ending after さえ (a ば-form or なら, not ても). Sentence-building (★) questions often test the order ます-stem + さえ + すれば (忘れさえしなければ, 練習さえすれば). In reading passages, さえ〜ば tells you what the writer thinks is the only thing that matters.
