中 is added to a noun and has two readings. Read ちゅう, it means that an action is going on now (電話中 = on the phone) or that something happens at some point within a period (今週中に = by the end of this week). Read じゅう, it means the whole of a time or place with nothing left out: 一日中 is 'all day long' and 日本中 is 'all over Japan'. The reading is fixed for each word, so learn the common words one by one.
§1Structure
Noun + 中, with no の in between. (1) Action noun + 中（ちゅう）: 仕事中, 電話中, 食事中, 授業中, 旅行中 = in the middle of, during. (2) Period + 中（ちゅう）(+ に): 午前中, 今週中, 今月中 = within that period. Note the readings 今日中（きょうじゅう）and 今年中（ことしじゅう）. (3) Period or place + 中（じゅう）: 一日中, 一年中, 日本中, 世界中, 部屋中 = all through, all over.

田中さんは今、電話中です。
たなかさんはいま、でんわちゅうです。

じゅぎょうちゅうははなさないでください。

§3Common mistakes
- Wrong reading. ✗ 一日中 = いちにちちゅう → ○ いちにちじゅう. ✗ 今日中 = きょうちゅう → ○ きょうじゅう. ✗ 午前中 = ごぜんじゅう → ○ ごぜんちゅう. As a guide, 'in the middle of an action' is ちゅう and 'the whole time / the whole place' is じゅう, but words like 今日中 and 今年中 are read じゅう even when they mean 'within'.
- Putting の before 中: ✗ 今、仕事の中です → ○ 今、仕事中です. ✗ 一日の中、寝ていました → ○ 一日中寝ていました. 中 as a suffix attaches directly to the noun. 〜の中（なか）is a different expression that means 'inside': かばんの中.
- Adding に to 一日中 and similar 'the whole time' words: ✗ 一日中に勉強しました → ○ 一日中勉強しました. に is used when something happens at one point within the period, especially a deadline: ○ 今日中に出してください (please hand it in before today ends).
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜ています (action in progress)
- Both can say that something is going on now: 父は今、食事中です and 父は今、ごはんを食べています both mean 'My father is eating now'. 〜ています can be made from almost any action verb. 中 attaches to a noun, mostly a noun that names an action (食事, 電話, 仕事, 勉強, 旅行), so you cannot say ✗ 食べる中 or ✗ 食べて中. 〜中です is short, so it is common on signs and at work: 会議中, 使用中, 準備中.
- noun + の + 中 (なか, inside)
- 部屋の中（なか）にねこがいます means 'There is a cat in the room': it tells where something is. 部屋中（じゅう）に本があります means 'There are books all over the room': the whole room is covered. With の, 中 is the word なか (inside). Without の, 中 is a suffix read ちゅう or じゅう.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In the N5 and N4 kanji-reading section, 一日中（いちにちじゅう）, 午前中（ごぜんちゅう）and 今日中（きょうじゅう）are typical items, so learn the reading of each word. In grammar questions, watch the particle after 中: a deadline takes に (今週中に出します), but 'the whole time' takes no に (一日中寝ていました). In listening and reading, 〜中に in a request means a deadline: 今週中に means any time before the week ends, not 'all week'. Words such as 電話中, 食事中 and 会議中 also appear in short workplace conversations.
