ぐらい / くらい comes after an amount and shows that the number is not exact: 20分ぐらい is 'about 20 minutes'. It is used for how much, how many and how long. For an approximate point in time (about 3 o'clock, around April), the standard word is ごろ. When you say how long an action lasts (2時間ぐらい勉強します), the length of time is used without the particle に.
§1Structure
Number + counter (amount, length of time, price, number of people) + ぐらい / くらい. Question words: どのくらい / どのぐらい (how long, how much), 何分ぐらい, 何人ぐらい, いくつぐらい. ぐらい and くらい mean the same; both are correct.

§3Common mistakes
- Using ごろ after a length of time: ✗ 2時間ごろ勉強しました. ごろ is for a point in time (2時ごろ). For a length of time or an amount, use ぐらい: ○ 2時間ぐらい勉強しました.
- Putting ぐらい before the number, like English 'about ten' or Vietnamese 'khoảng mười': ✗ ぐらい10人います. ぐらい comes after the number and its counter: ○ 10人ぐらいいます.
- Adding に after a length of time: ✗ 1時間ぐらいに歩きました. When you say how long you do something, the length of time is used without に: ○ 1時間ぐらい歩きました.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- ごろ (around a point in time)
- ぐらい follows an amount or a length of time: 8時間ぐらい寝ました (I slept for about eight hours). ごろ follows a point in time such as a clock time, a date or a month: 8時ごろ寝ました (I went to bed at about eight). The difference between 8時間 (eight hours) and 8時 (eight o'clock) decides which word to use. ごろ is never used after a length of time.
- 約 (approximately, formal)
- 約 also means 'about', but it comes before the number and is used in news, notices and writing: 約10人 (approximately ten people). ぐらい comes after the number and is the everyday word: 10人ぐらい. Learners at N5 should use ぐらい in conversation.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
N5 grammar questions often give ぐらい and ごろ in the same set of choices. Look at the word before the blank: 〜時間, 〜分 (as a length), 〜人, 〜円, 〜か月 take ぐらい; 〜時, 〜月, 〜日 (a date) take ごろ. どのくらい appears in short dialogues where the answer is a length of time or an amount (30分ぐらいです). In sentence-building questions, the order is number → counter → ぐらい → verb, with no に.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the word that fits the blank: うちから会社まで電車で40分__かかります。
うちからかいしゃまででんしゃでよんじゅっぷん__かかります。
2. Which sentence is correct?
3. Choose the question that fits the answer: A: 日本語を__勉強しましたか。 B: 6か月ぐらいです。
A: にほんごを__べんきょうしましたか。 B: ろっかげつぐらいです。
