〜ごろ

ごろ

around (a point in time)

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

ごろ comes after a point in time and means 'at about' or 'around': 6時ごろ is 'around six o'clock'. Use it when you do not know or do not want to say the exact time. It is only for points in time. For an approximate amount or length of time (about two hours, about ten people), use ぐらい.

§1Structure

Time word (clock time 〜時, date 〜日, month 〜月, year 〜年, 昼 etc.) + ごろ (+ に). The particle に after ごろ is optional: 3時ごろ来ます and 3時ごろに来ます are both correct. Question words: 何時ごろ, いつごろ.

§2Examples

  • 毎朝6時ごろ起きます。

    まいあさろくじごろおきます。

I get up at about six every morning.

  • 田中さんは3時ごろに来ました。

    たなかさんはさんじごろにきました。

Mr. Tanaka came at around three o'clock.

  • 今晩は何時ごろ帰りますか。

    こんばんはなんじごろかえりますか。

About what time will you come home tonight?

  • 桜は4月ごろ咲きます。

    さくらはしがつごろさきます。

    Cherry blossoms bloom around April.

  • きのうは12時ごろまで寝ませんでした。

    きのうはじゅうにじごろまでねませんでした。

Yesterday I didn't go to bed until about twelve.

  • いつごろ国へ帰りますか。

    いつごろくにへかえりますか。

Around when will you go back to your country?

  • 来月の10日ごろ、旅行に行きます。

    らいげつのとおかごろ、りょこうにいきます。

I'm going on a trip around the 10th of next month.

  • 昼ごろ、雨が降った。

    ひるごろ、あめがふった。

    It rained around noon.

§3Common mistakes

  • Using ごろ for a length of time or an amount, because English 'about' and Vietnamese 'khoảng' cover both: ✗ 30分ごろ待ちました. ごろ is only for a point in time. For how long or how many, use ぐらい: ○ 30分ぐらい待ちました.
  • Wrong position: ✗ ごろ7時に起きます / ✗ 7時にごろ起きます. ごろ comes directly after the time word, and に (if used) comes after ごろ: ○ 7時ごろ起きます / ○ 7時ごろに起きます.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

ぐらい / くらい (about, for amounts)
ごろ follows a point in time: 10時ごろ寝ました (I went to bed at about ten). ぐらい follows an amount or a length of time: 10時間ぐらい寝ました (I slept for about ten hours). Check whether the word is 〜時 (o'clock) or 〜時間 (hours). In textbooks and on the JLPT, the standard word after a clock time is ごろ.
に (exact point in time)
7時に会いましょう gives an exact time: let's meet at seven. 7時ごろ会いましょう is looser: a little before or after seven is fine. After a clock time alone, に is normally needed (7時に), but after ごろ it is optional (7時ごろ / 7時ごろに).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

N5 grammar questions put ごろ next to ぐらい, に and から. Decide by the word before the blank: a clock time, a date or a month → ごろ; 〜時間, 〜分間, 〜人, 〜円 → ぐらい. In sentence-building questions, keep the order time → ごろ → (に) → verb. In listening, 何時ごろ and いつごろ are common in questions about plans, and the answer is a time, not a length of time.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: あしたは朝9時__うちを出ます。

    あしたはあさくじ__うちをでます。

  • 2. Which sentence is correct?

  • 3. What does 7時ごろ行きます mean?

    しちじごろいきます。
