〜てからでないと／〜てからでなければ

Verb て-form + からでないと / からでなければ + a clause that means 'cannot', 'must not', 'it is difficult' or 'there will be trouble'. A time word + からでないと is also possible: 3時からでないと ('not until 3 o'clock'). でなければ is a little more formal than でないと.

• 宿題が終わってからでないと、遊びに行ってはいけないよ。

  しゅくだいがおわってからでないと、あそびにいってはいけないよ。

  You must not go out to play until your homework is finished.

• 親に相談してからでなければ、お返事できません。

  おやにそうだんしてからでなければ、おへんじできません。

  I cannot give you an answer until I have talked with my parents.

• 予約してからでないと、この店には入れない。

  よやくしてからでないと、このみせにははいれない。

  You can't get into this restaurant unless you make a reservation first.

• お金を払ってからでないと、中に入れないんですか。

  おかねをはらってからでないと、なかにはいれないんですか。

  Can't we go inside until we have paid?

• 明日は、3時からでないと、時間がありません。

  あしたは、さんじからでないと、じかんがありません。

  Tomorrow I won't have time until 3 o'clock.

• 学生のとき、試験が終わってからでないと、アルバイトができなかった。

  がくせいのとき、しけんがおわってからでないと、アルバイトができなかった。

  When I was a student, I couldn't work part-time until the exams were over.

• 準備運動をしてからでないと、けがをしますよ。

  じゅんびうんどうをしてからでないと、けがをしますよ。

  If you don't warm up first, you'll get hurt.

• Ending the sentence with a positive action. 手を洗ってからでないと、ご飯を食べます is wrong, because the main clause must show something impossible, not allowed or unwanted: 手を洗ってからでないと、ご飯を食べてはいけません. If you only want to give the order of two actions, use てから: 手を洗ってから、ご飯を食べます.
• Using a form other than the て-form: 確認したからでないと and 確認するからでないと are wrong. The pattern is built on 〜てから, so it is always 確認してからでないと.
• Misreading the two negatives. 見てからでないと、買えない does not mean 'I will not see it' or 'I will not buy it'. It means 'I can buy it only after I see it'. Also, から here comes from 〜てから ('after'), not from the から that gives a reason.

てから (after doing)

てから only gives the order of two actions, and the main clause can be any action: 説明を聞いてから、申し込みます (I'll apply after I hear the explanation). てからでないと makes the first action a condition and is followed by a negative or unwanted result: 説明を聞いてからでないと、申し込めません (You can't apply until you have heard the explanation).

てはじめて (only after ... did I ...)

Both say that the first action is needed, but the second half is opposite. てはじめて is followed by a positive result, usually something you came to understand or became able to do: 自分で働いてはじめて、お金の大切さが分かった (Only after I worked myself did I understand how important money is). てからでないと is followed by something you cannot do yet: 働いてからでないと、この苦労は分からないだろう (You probably can't understand this hardship until you have worked).

In N3 grammar questions, the blank is often the end of the sentence: after 〜てからでないと, choose a negative or 'cannot' ending such as 〜られません or 〜てはいけません, not 〜ましょう or 〜ます. Other questions give 〜てから, 〜てからでないと and 〜てはじめて as choices, so check whether the main clause is a plain action, something impossible, or a realization. In reading, the pattern often appears in rules and notices; read it as 'first A, then B is possible'.
