This の takes the place of a noun that both people already understand, like "one" in "the red one" or like "mine." It lets you avoid repeating the same noun: このかさはわたしのです = This umbrella is mine. It is mostly used for things. For people it can sound rude, so 人 or 方 is usually used instead.
§1Structure
Noun + の (わたしの = mine, 田中さんの = Mr. Tanaka's). い-adjective + の (赤いの, 大きいの). な-adjective + な + の (静かなの, きれいなの). Verb plain form + の (昨日買ったの = the one I bought yesterday). After noun + の, a second の is not added (✕ わたしのの).

§3Common mistakes
- Saying both の and the noun. ✕ 赤いのかさをください → ○ 赤いかさをください or ○ 赤いのをください. This の replaces the noun, so use one or the other. An い-adjective connects to a noun directly, with no の in between.
- Forgetting な after a な-adjective. ✕ きれいのをください → ○ きれいなのをください. ✕ 静かのがいいです → ○ 静かなのがいいです. A な-adjective needs な before の, just as it does before a noun (きれいな花).
- Doubling の after a noun. ✕ このかさはわたしののです → ○ このかさはわたしのです. わたしの本 becomes わたしの, not わたしのの: one の does both jobs.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- Noun + の + noun (linking の)
- In 名詞+の+名詞, の links two nouns and the second noun is said: これはわたしの本です (This is my book). With the pronoun の, the second noun is left out because it is already clear: この本はわたしのです (This book is mine). If nothing is left out, do not use this の: ✕ 大きいのかばん → ○ 大きいかばん.
- 〜のは/〜のが/〜のを (の that turns an action into a noun)
- The pronoun の stands for a thing: 大きいのが好きです (I like the big one). The nominalizer の (N4) turns an action into a noun: 走るのが好きです (I like running). After a verb, check the meaning: 昨日買ったのはこれです = "The one I bought yesterday is this" (a thing), while 買い物するのは楽しいです = "Shopping is fun" (an action).
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In grammar-form questions, this の appears in shopping conversations: the blank in もう少し( )はありますか takes 安いの, and the wrong choices are forms like 安いな or 安くの. Questions with だれの and answers like わたしのです are also common. In sentence-building (★) questions, remember that の comes right after the adjective or noun and is followed by a particle (を, が, は) or です: 赤い / の / を / ください. In listening and reading, find which noun の stands for; it is normally a noun that appeared just before.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the words that fit the blank: このシャツは小さいです。もう少し__はありますか。
このシャツはちいさいです。もうすこし__はありますか。
2. Which sentence correctly says "That watch is mine"?
3. A customer in a bag shop says: 「このかばんは白いですね。黒いのをください。」 What does の do in 黒いの?
このかばんはしろいですね。くろいのをください。
