〜こそ
こそ
It is precisely ... that / this time for sure
〜こそ strongly points to one thing and says 'this one, and not any other'. It is used to say that something is the most important or the true one (これこそ本物だ), to show strong determination after a failure (今度こそ合格したい), and in the polite reply こちらこそ ('it is I who should say that'). It usually stresses something the speaker sees as important or right.
今度こそ、試験に合格したいです。
こんどこそ、しけんにごうかくしたいです。
This time, I really want to pass the exam.
Structure
Noun + こそ. こそ takes the place of が and を (私が → 私こそ, これを → これこそ). こそが is also possible for the subject (練習こそが大切だ). Common set phrases: 今度こそ, 今年こそ, 次こそ (this time for sure) and こちらこそ (the same to you). (〜からこそ, which stresses a reason, is a separate pattern.)

Common mistakes
3
- Keeping が or を before こそ. こそ takes their place: ✕ 私がこそ手伝います → ○ 私こそ手伝います. For the subject, こそが is also fine: ○ 練習こそが大切だ.
- Using こそ for 'even' in a negative sentence. For something basic that did not happen, use さえ: ✕ 忙しくて、水こそ飲めなかった → ○ 忙しくて、水さえ飲めなかった (I was so busy I couldn't even drink water). こそ picks out the most important or true thing, not an extreme example.
- Attaching こそ directly to a verb or a sentence. こそ usually follows a noun (or a particle such as から); to stress a reason, use から + こそ: ✕ 毎日練習したこそ、上手になった → ○ 毎日練習したからこそ、上手になった (It is precisely because I practiced every day that I got good).
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜さえ/〜でさえ (even)
- Both pick out one thing, but in different ways. さえ gives an extreme example and means 'even X': 子どもでさえ知っている (Even children know it). こそ says that X is the most important or the true one: この店のパンこそ本当においしい (It is this shop's bread that is really good). さえ is common in negative sentences; こそ is common when stressing something good, important, or a strong wish.
- 〜からこそ (precisely because)
- Noun + こそ stresses a thing or a person: 母こそ私の先生だ (My mother is my real teacher). から + こそ stresses a reason and comes after a clause: 母が厳しかったからこそ、今の私がある (It is precisely because my mother was strict that I am who I am today). If the stressed part is a reason with から, use からこそ.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In the grammar-form section, こそ often appears with words like 今度, 今年 and 次 after a sentence about a past failure, and the choices usually include さえ, なんか and ばかり. こちらこそ can appear in listening or in a short dialogue, as the reply to thanks, an apology or よろしくお願いします. In reading passages, X こそ marks the writer's main claim, so it helps you answer 'what does the writer think is most important?'
