〜だけ(範囲いっぱい)

だけ

As much as (possible / you want)

This だけ does not mean 'only'. It means 'up to the limit': as much as you can, as much as you want, or as much as you need. The word before だけ sets that limit, and the verb after it says what you do up to that limit: 食べられるだけ食べる means 'eat as much as you can eat'.

週末は好きなだけ寝られるから、うれしい。

しゅうまつはすきなだけねられるから、うれしい。

I'm happy because on weekends I can sleep as much as I like.

Structure

Verb (dictionary form, very often the potential form) + だけ: できるだけ, 食べられるだけ. Verb たい-form + だけ: 休みたいだけ. い-adjective ほしい + だけ: ほしいだけ. な-adjective + な + だけ: 好きなだけ, 必要なだけ. Before a noun, use だけの: 持てるだけの荷物. The same verb can also be said twice: やるだけやる (do everything you can).

Common mistakes

3
  • Reading this だけ as 'only'. 好きなだけ食べてください means 'eat as much as you like'. If you mean 'eat only the things you like', say 好きなものだけ食べてください.
  • Dropping な after a な-adjective. ✗ 好きだけ / ✗ 必要だけ → ✓ 好きなだけ / ✓ 必要なだけ.
  • Using the ます-form before だけ. ✗ 食べられますだけ食べてください → ✓ 食べられるだけ食べてください. The verb before だけ stays in the dictionary form; politeness goes at the end of the sentence.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜だけ (only)
The N5 だけ limits something: りんごを一つだけ食べた (I ate only one apple). The N3 だけ shows the full amount up to a limit: 食べられるだけ食べた (I ate as much as I could). A simple test: if だけ comes after a number or a noun, it usually means 'only'; if it comes after できる, a potential verb, 〜たい, ほしい or 好きな, it means 'as much as'.
〜ほど / 〜くらい (to the extent that)
Both can follow 〜たい, but the meaning is different. 泣きたいくらい悲しい describes how strong a feeling is: 'so sad that I want to cry'. 泣きたいだけ泣いていい tells you how much you may do something: 'you can cry as much as you want'. After だけ comes the same action (泣く); after ほど / くらい comes a state (悲しい).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar questions, look at the word before the blank: できる, a potential verb (持てる, 食べられる), 〜たい, ほしい or 好きな followed by the same kind of action points to だけ. A common trap is 好きだけ without な. In sentence-ordering questions, remember the order 食べられる + だけ + 食べる, and だけの + noun before a noun. In reading passages, できるだけ often appears in notices and requests (できるだけ早く, できるだけ静かに).
