〜にかわって/〜にかわり
にかわって/にかわり
In place of (a person / thing)
〜にかわって means that someone or something takes the place of the noun before it. It is used when one person does another person's job for a time (the manager is away, so I speak instead), and when something new replaces something old (email in place of letters). It sounds a little formal and is common in speeches, announcements and news.
部長に代わって、私があいさつをします。
ぶちょうにかわって、わたしがあいさつをします。
I will give the greeting in place of the department manager.
Structure
Noun + にかわって (often written に代わって). More formal: Noun + にかわり. Before a noun: Noun + にかわる + noun (石油に代わるエネルギー). The pattern is 'A にかわって B が ...': B does it, not A.

Common mistakes
3
- Putting a verb before にかわって. ✗ 電話するにかわって、メールを送った → ✓ 電話するかわりに、メールを送った. にかわって follows a noun only. After a verb, use かわりに.
- Using にかわって to mean 'for the benefit of'. ✗ 子どもに代わって、おもちゃを買った (meaning: for my child) → ✓ 子どものために、おもちゃを買った. にかわって means someone takes another person's place; for 'for someone's sake', use ために.
- Using にかわって directly before a noun. ✗ 石油に代わってエネルギー → ✓ 石油に代わるエネルギー (an energy source that replaces oil). To modify a noun, use にかわる.
How it's different from similar grammar
1
- 〜かわりに (instead of / in exchange for)
- With a noun, the two are close in meaning: 父のかわりに兄が来た and 父に代わって兄が来た both mean 'my brother came instead of my father'. Note that かわりに needs の after a noun. にかわって sounds more formal and is only used after nouns. かわりに is used more in daily talk, can also follow a verb (行くかわりに), and has another meaning, 'in exchange for': 手伝うかわりに、ご飯をおごってね (I'll help, but in return, buy me dinner).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-choice questions, にかわって is often mixed with によって, にとって and について. Check the meaning: does someone or something take the place of the noun? Also check the form: にかわる before a noun, and no verb before にかわって. In reading passages, look for sentences about changes in society, such as 'A に代わって B が使われるようになった'.
