〜反面
はんめん
On the flip side / But at the same time
'A 反面、B' shows two opposite sides of one person or thing: A is often a good point and B a bad point, or the other way round. The two sides should really be opposite, so two good points (or two bad points) do not fit. It sounds a little formal and is common in writing, but it is also used in speech.
車は便利な反面、お金がかかる。
くるまはべんりなはんめん、おかねがかかる。
A car is convenient, but on the flip side it costs a lot of money.

Common mistakes
3
- Using 反面 for two different people or things. 反面 shows two sides of the same one; for a contrast between two people, use のに対して or 一方: ✗ 兄は背が高い反面、弟は低い → ✓ 兄は背が高いのに対して、弟は低い.
- Joining two points that are not opposite. 反面 needs a good side and a bad side (or the reverse): ✗ この店は安い反面、おいしい → ✓ この店は安くて、おいしい. (But: この店は安い反面、いつも混んでいる is fine.)
- Wrong connection with な-adjectives and nouns: ✗ 便利だ反面 → ✓ 便利な反面 (or 便利である反面); ✗ 道具の反面 → ✓ 道具である反面.

- 〜一方(で) (on the other hand / while)
- For two sides of one thing, both are possible: 都会は便利な反面、物価が高い / 都会は便利な一方で、物価が高い (The city is convenient, but prices are high). 一方(で) is wider: it can also contrast two different people or things (父は朝早く起きる一方、母は夜遅くまで起きている), and it can show two activities done in the same period (仕事をする一方で、趣味も楽しんでいる). For these, 反面 is usually not used.
- 〜に対して (in contrast to / whereas)
- のに対して compares two different things side by side, usually with two different subjects: 日本の夏は暑いのに対して、この国の夏は涼しい (Summer in Japan is hot, whereas summer in this country is cool). 反面 looks at one thing and shows its two opposite sides: この国の夏は涼しい反面、とても短い (Summer in this country is cool, but on the flip side it's very short).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-form questions, 反面 is often mixed with うえに, ばかりか and 一方で. Check that the two parts are opposite (good vs bad) and about the same thing: that points to 反面. うえに and ばかりか add a point in the same direction. In reading passages, 反面 often introduces the writer's view of the bad side of something that seems good.
