〜てくれ

てくれ

Do ... (for me) — blunt request

〜てくれ is the plain, strong way to ask someone to do something for you. くれ is the command form of くれる. It is used mainly by men, to close friends, family, or people below them, and it sounds rough to anyone else. It also appears in reported speech, as in 〜てくれと言われた. There it only shows that a request was made, so anyone can use it.

ちょっと待ってくれ。すぐ行くから。

ちょっとまってくれ。すぐいくから。

Wait a second. I'm coming right away.

Structure

Verb て-form + くれ. Negative: verb ない-form + で + くれ (行かないでくれ). In reported speech: 〜てくれ + と言われる / と頼まれる.

Common mistakes

3
  • Using 〜てくれ to a teacher, a boss, a customer, or a stranger. It sounds rude. ✕ 先生、もう一度説明してくれ → ○ 先生、もう一度説明していただけませんか.
  • Making the negative with 〜なくて. The negative request is 〜ないで + くれ: ✕ 行かなくてくれ → ○ 行かないでくれ.
  • Mixing up the request 〜てくれ with the statement 〜てくれる / 〜てくれた. 手伝ってくれ means 'Help me', but 手伝ってくれた means 'He (kindly) helped me'.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
てください (please do)
〜てください is the polite request that anyone can use to almost anyone: ここに名前を書いてください (Please write your name here). 〜てくれ is the plain form of the same request and is used only in rough, close talk: ここに名前を書いてくれ. When you report a request, 〜てくれと言われた is fine even if the speaker really said 〜てください.
Command form (止まれ, 書け)
The command form gives an order and does not show that the action is for the speaker: 早く起きろ (Get up quickly). 〜てくれ is a request, because くれる means 'do it for me', so it is a little softer: 早く起きてくれ (Get up quickly, will you). Both are rough and are not used to people above you.

How this shows up on the JLPT

At N3, 〜てくれ is tested most often inside reported speech: 〜てくれと言われた / 〜てくれと頼まれた. In reading and listening, you must work out who asked and who will do the action: in 父に来てくれと頼まれた, the father asked and 'I' will come. In grammar-choice questions, check the negative form 〜ないでくれ and do not confuse it with 〜てくれる.
