〜てごらん
てごらん
Try doing ... (said gently to a child or junior)
〜てごらん gently tells the listener to try doing something. It is a softer way to say 〜てみなさい. Parents say it to children, teachers to students, and older people to younger people. It is not used to people above you, and you cannot use it for your own actions.

- Using it to a boss, a teacher, or a customer. 〜てごらん is for people below you or very close to you. ✕ 部長、このお菓子を食べてごらん → ○ 部長、このお菓子を食べてみてください.
- Attaching ごらん to a form other than the て-form. ✕ 食べごらん / ✕ 食べるごらん → ○ 食べてごらん.
- Using it for your own action. 〜てごらん only tells the listener to try. For yourself, use 〜てみる: ✕ 私も食べてごらんます → ○ 私も食べてみます.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- てみる (try doing)
- 〜てみる means 'try doing' for any person and in any form: 私も着てみます (I'll try it on, too), 着てみてください (Please try it on). 〜てごらん is only an instruction to the listener, close in meaning to 〜てみなさい, and only to someone below you or close to you: この服、着てごらん (Try this on).
- なさい (do it — instruction)
- 〜なさい is a clear instruction from a parent or teacher, and the listener is expected to obey: 早く寝なさい (Go to bed now). 〜てごらん is softer. It invites the listener to try something and see what happens: ベッドで目を閉じてごらん。すぐ眠れるよ (Try closing your eyes in bed. You'll fall asleep soon).
How this shows up on the JLPT
〜てごらん appears mostly in N3 listening and in conversations inside reading passages, where a parent, teacher, or senior speaks to someone younger. It helps you work out who is speaking to whom. In grammar-choice questions, check that the verb before ごらん is in the て-form, and do not mix it up with the honorific ご覧になる, which means 'to look' and shows respect to the person who looks.
