Don't Hang Up on a Telephone Relay Service Call
「こちらは電話リレーサービスです。」という電話をうけたら、切らないでください。これは、耳が聞こえない人などと聞こえる人の電話を、つうやくオペレータがつなぐサービスです。聞こえない人は手話や文字でオペレータにつたえて、オペレータはこえでつたえます。聞こえる人の話は、手話や文字で聞こえない人につたえます。
このサービスを知らない人が、いたずら電話だと思って切ることがあります。オペレータが間に入るので、へんじがおくれることがあります。いつもの電話と同じように話してください。
電話をうける人は、とうろくもお金もいりません。オペレータは話をそのままつたえるだけで、代わりに用事をすませることはできません。

Check your understanding after reading
If you get a call that begins "This is the Telephone Relay Service," do not hang up. An interpreter operator connects a person who cannot hear (or has similar difficulties) with a hearing person: the caller uses sign language or text, the operator passes it on by voice, and your words are relayed back to the caller in sign language or text. People who do not know the service sometimes take it for a prank call and hang up, and replies may be delayed because of the operator, but just talk as on any call. The receiver needs no registration and pays nothing; the operator only relays what is said and cannot handle the business for the caller.
