〜ものだから/〜もので

ものだから/もので

Because (giving an excuse)

'A ものだから B' gives a personal reason A for B, often to explain or excuse something bad such as being late or making a mistake. It has the feeling 'it couldn't be helped, because A'. もので is a little softer and is common in polite apologies. The second part is usually a fact or a result, and it is not usually an order or an invitation (〜なさい, 〜ましょう).

電車が遅れたものですから、会議に間に合いませんでした。

でんしゃがおくれたものですから、かいぎにまにあいませんでした。

The train was delayed, so I couldn't make it to the meeting in time.

Common mistakes

3
  • Following ものだから with an order or an invitation. ✗ 時間がないものだから、急ぎなさい → ✓ 時間がないから、急ぎなさい. ものだから explains your own situation; it does not push someone to act.
  • Wrong connection after nouns and な-adjectives. They need な: ✗ 初めてだものだから / 初めてのもので → ✓ 初めてなものだから / 初めてなもので; ✗ 下手のもので → ✓ 下手なもので.
  • Using ものだから for an objective reason in a formal notice or report. It sounds like a personal excuse. ✗ 工事をするものですから、この道は通れません → ✓ 工事のため、この道は通れません.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
ので (because)
ので is a general, polite way to give a reason, and it can be followed by a request or suggestion: 寒いので、窓を閉めましょう. ものだから is used for your personal situation when you want to explain or excuse something that went wrong: 寒かったものですから、窓を閉めてしまいました (It was cold, so I closed the window — I hope that's all right). It carries the feeling 'I couldn't help it'.
もの / もん at the end of a sentence
Sentence-final もの / もん also gives a reason, but it ends the sentence and sounds childish or like a complaint: だって、眠いもん (Well, I'm sleepy!). ものだから / もので joins the reason to a result in the same sentence: 眠かったものだから、授業中に寝てしまった (I was sleepy, so I fell asleep in class).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In the grammar section, ものだから / もので often appears in a sentence where someone explains or apologizes (すみません, 遅れて, できなくて). Choices like くせに, おかげで and のに may appear; pick ものだから when the speaker gives a personal excuse. Watch the connection 名詞・な形容詞+な+もので. In listening, もので is a common opening for polite excuses.
