夜間中学は、主に夕方から夜に授業が行われる中学校です。昼の中学校と同じように、法律で決められた「中学校」で、授業は週5日あり、教員免許を持つ先生が教えています。公立の場合、授業料は無料で、すべての課程を終えれば中学校卒業になります。
通っている人はさまざまです。不登校などで十分に通えないまま中学校を卒業した人や、日本や母国で義務教育を終えていない外国籍の人などがいます。授業は生徒の状況に合わせて行われます。日本語の指導が必要な場合、専門家や通訳と協力して教えている学校もあります。運動会や修学旅行などの行事もあり、給食がある学校もあります。
入学を希望する人は、まず各夜間中学か、住んでいる市区町村の教育委員会に相談してください。入学の時期や人数は学校ごとに違いますが、年度の途中から入学できる場合もあります。学校説明会や体験入学を行っている学校もあるので、まず参加することがすすめられています。
