すると
すると
thereupon / then / in that case
In its first use, すると says that right after someone did A, B happened or was discovered. B is something the speaker does not control: a change, a reaction or a new fact. It is common in stories and written explanations. In its second use, すると takes what the other person just said and draws a conclusion from it, like 'then' or 'in that case'.
ボタンを押しました。すると、ドアが開きました。
ボタンをおしました。すると、ドアがあきました。
I pushed the button. Then the door opened.
Structure
(1) Sentence A (an action, usually past)。すると、sentence B (what happened next or what was found; usually past)。 (2) In conversation, after what the other person said: すると、+ a conclusion or a question to check it ('In that case, ...').

Common mistakes

- Putting your own will, invitation or request after すると in the first use. B is something that happened, not something you decide. ✗ 駅に着いた。すると、コーヒーを飲もう → ✓ 駅に着いたら、コーヒーを飲もう.
- Using すると for the simple order of your own actions. すると shows a reaction or discovery; for 'and then I did ...', use それから. ✗ 朝ごはんを食べた。すると、歯を磨いた → ✓ 朝ごはんを食べた。それから、歯を磨いた.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜たら / 〜と (when I did ..., I found)
- The meaning is almost the same, but the shape is different. 〜たら/〜と joins A and B into one sentence: スイッチを入れると、音楽が流れた (When I turned it on, music started playing). すると comes at the start of a new sentence after A is finished: スイッチを入れた。すると、音楽が流れた. すると is common in written stories; 〜たら is more common in conversation.
- それから (and then, after that)
- それから lists actions in order, and the next action can be your own choice: 買い物をした。それから、映画を見た (I went shopping. After that, I watched a movie). すると is used when B is a reaction or a result that came from A, not your next planned action: ベルを鳴らした。すると、犬がほえた (I rang the bell. Then the dog barked).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 'grammar in a passage' questions, すると often appears in short stories, and you must choose it over それから, ところが or ところで. Check whether the next sentence is a natural reaction to the action just before it. In listening, すると at the start of a reply means the speaker is drawing a conclusion from what they heard.
