- Using おそれがある for something good. ✗ 明日は晴れるおそれがあります → ✓ 明日は晴れるでしょう / 晴れそうです. おそれ contains the idea of fear, so the result should be something bad or unwanted.
- Forgetting の after a noun, or adding の after a verb. ✗ 台風おそれがある / ✗ 遅れるのおそれがある → ✓ 台風のおそれがある / 遅れるおそれがある.
- Using it in casual talk with friends. 「明日、遅刻するおそれがある」 sounds stiff, like a news report. In everyday conversation, 遅刻するかもしれない is more natural.
How it's different from similar grammar
1
- 〜かもしれない (maybe, might)
- かもしれない shows any possibility, good or bad, and is common in conversation: 明日はいい天気になるかもしれない (It might be nice weather tomorrow). おそれがある is only for bad results and is formal, so it suits news and notices: 川の近くは水があふれるおそれがある (Near the river, there is a risk of flooding).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-choice questions, look at the meaning of the sentence: if the result is a disaster, damage or a delay, and the tone is formal (天気予報, ニュース, 〜ため), おそれがある is a strong candidate. In sentence-ordering questions, check the connection: a noun needs の (大雪のおそれ), but a verb connects directly (降るおそれ). In reading passages, you will see it in notices and news articles about weather or safety.
