〜ものではない
ものではない
one shouldn't ...
〜ものではない gives general advice based on common sense or good manners: 'one shouldn't do that'. It is often used by parents, teachers or older people when they warn or scold someone: 人の悪口を言うものではない (you shouldn't speak ill of others). It is not about a written rule or one person's plan; it is about what people in general should not do. With a potential verb (なれる, できる), it says something is not easy to do.

Common mistakes
3
- Putting the verb in the past form: ×人の物を勝手に使ったものではない → ○人の物を勝手に使うものではない. The verb stays in the dictionary form, even when you scold someone for something they already did.
- Using it to say that you yourself won't do something. ものではない is general advice, not a plan: ×私は明日のパーティーに行くものではない → ○私は明日のパーティーに行きません / 行かないつもりです.
- Using it to a boss, a customer or someone older. It sounds like a lecture from above, so it is usually said to children, younger people or people close to you.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜てはいけない (must not)
- てはいけない says something is not allowed, often because of a rule: ここで写真をとってはいけません (you must not take photos here). ものではない is not about rules; it is advice from common sense or manners: 人の失敗を笑うものではない (you shouldn't laugh at other people's mistakes). For a sign or a school rule, use てはいけない.
- 〜べきではない (ought not to)
- べきではない gives the speaker's own opinion, often about a specific situation: この計画は今やめるべきではない (we shouldn't stop this plan now). ものではない presents advice as something everyone already knows, like a lesson about life: 目上の人に、そんな言い方はするものではない. ものではない is mostly used for manners, not for plans or policies.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-form questions, ものではない often appears at the end of a sentence about manners (人の〜を勝手に…, 食べ物を…), and you may have to pick the verb form before it: the dictionary form. Questions also check that you can tell it from てはいけない (rules) and from ものだ (general truth). In reading passages, ものではない often shows the writer's view of good manners or a lesson from an older person.
