The Legal Speed on Neighborhood Streets Is Now 30 km/h

Since September 1, 2026, the legal speed for cars on residential streets (seikatsu dōro: streets used daily by local residents, with no center line or median) is 30 km/h instead of 60 km/h, because a high share of those killed or injured on such streets were pedestrians or cyclists hit by cars, and, by a National Police Agency study, a pedestrian's risk of death rises sharply once a car exceeds 30 km/h. Where a sign or road marking sets a maximum speed, that applies instead; drivers and people close to a driver should check and share the new rule, putting people first on residential streets.
