Cars on Neighborhood Streets Are Now Limited to 30 km/h

Since September 1, 2026, cars on residential streets (seikatsu dōro: neighborhood streets with no center line or divider) may go at most 30 km/h instead of 60 km/h, because a pedestrian hit by a car going faster than 30 km/h has a sharply higher risk of dying. Where a speed sign is posted, the sign applies; drivers and people whose family or friends drive should check and talk about the new rule, and drive safely with people first.
