Children Swallowing Objects or Choking: What to Do in an Emergency

Children sometimes put unexpected things in their mouths while adults are not watching. Button batteries, adults' medicine, tobacco and detergent are dangerous just by entering the body, so as a rule do not force vomiting but see a doctor promptly, taking the same item with you if you have it; anything smaller than a 3-year-old's mouth (about 4 cm) can be swallowed. If the child cannot make a sound, seems to have trouble breathing or suddenly turns pale, the child may be choking, so call an ambulance immediately and use first aid to get the object out before the paramedics arrive. If unsure what to do, you can call #8000 (hours differ by prefecture), and keep dangerous items out of children's reach, ideally keeping life-threatening medicine in a locked cabinet.
