The National Archives of Japan, in Tokyo and Tsukuba, keeps about 1.78 million important national records. At the Tokyo main building you can apply to see originals and take photos without flash. You can also search the records from home through the Digital Archive (available in English), visit exhibitions for free, and join a roughly monthly tour at the main building that needs no booking.
