Lithium-Ion Batteries: Wrong Disposal Can Lead to Fires

Lithium-ion batteries, found in many products such as smartphones, may catch fire from a strong impact, and batteries thrown out against the sorting rules can start fires in garbage trucks and treatment facilities; fires from garbage containing these batteries doubled from 4,260 in fiscal 2022 to 8,543 in fiscal 2023, and in a fiscal 2024 Ministry of the Environment survey, 72% of fires occurred in non-burnable garbage. Use up the power first, do not force out built-in batteries, check your municipality's rules, and removed batteries can be taken to a recycling box, which does not accept broken or swollen batteries or those from non-JBRC-member makers.
